The Council of Ministers initiated today the procedure to appoint Teresa Peramato Martín as the new State General Attorney at the proposal of the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes.

Peramato is a career prosecutor with 35 years of practice who has the unanimous recognition of legal actors. She has extensive experience, especially in the fight against gender-based violence. In fact, she is considered the main driver of the judicial specialization in this area. She is currently the head chamber prosecutor of the Criminal Section of the Supreme Court and delegated chamber prosecutor for the Protection and Guardianship of Victims in Criminal Proceedings.

Teresa Peramato joined the prosecutor career in 1990. After going through several Prosecutor's Offices (Tenerife, Valladolid and Barcelona), she moved to the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Madrid, where in 2005 she was appointed delegated prosecutor for the Section of Violence against Women. She was also a member of the group of experts of the State Observatory of Violence against Women to draft the first annual report of this organization in 2007.

In 2018 she filled the position of prosecutor assigned to the Prosecutor’s Office before the Constitutional Court. And in May 2021 she was appointed general chamber prosecutor to fight Violence against Women, which she held until January 2025.

Following the meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes, Félix Bolaños, highlighted that precisely today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Government has proposed someone with an undeniable feminist commitment to oversee the State General Attorney’s Office. Someone, he added, who is absolutely ideal to address the challenges of the Prosecutor’s Office and continue reinforcing its autonomy and prestige.

As contemplated by the Organic Statute of the Prosecutor’s Office, the new State General Attorney shall be appointed by the King, at the proposal of the Government, following consultation with the General Council of the Judiciary [CGPJ]. Once the report from the CGPJ has been received, the Government shall communicate their proposal to the Congress of Deputies so it may appear before the Justice Committee where her merits and adequacy shall be assessed.

Upon her final appointment, the State General Attorney shall be sworn in, either taking an oath or making an affirmation, before the King, and shall take up office before the Plenum of the Supreme Court.
