The Ministry of Justice is immersed in an important project to modernize the Civil Registry which entails changing the model we currently know to make it more agile and closer to citizens.
In this new model, the Civil Registry does not lose its essence as a guarantee of the integrity and accuracy of facts and acts related to our civil status connected to such important life events as the birth of our children. Neither does it lose its gratuitousness. Also, the number and location of the existing offices is maintained, as well as the staff working at this institution. However, the Civil Registry is being enhanced with a more modern and efficient organization, including social and technological advances.
The Civil Registry is adapting to the social circumstances of this century and focusing on people. The significance does not lie in the place where the fact to be registered occurs, but in the person to which said fact occurs. Thus, an individual registry is being created for each person to whom a unique personal code is assigned, under which are chronologically registered the facts and acts related to the identity, civil status and all other circumstances of an individual. In short, on a single page you can find all the information a person publishes in the Civil Registry: whether they married, signed prenuptial agreements, divorced, had children and if so, how many, when they died…
Technological advances are being incorporated into the Civil Registry, starting with a situation in which paper documents were the ones of value, dispersed across the various offices where they are safeguarded, a digital platform is now being implemented, called DICIREG, through which file cases can be processed electronically; all facts related to the civil status of people who must access the Registry are recorded, publicity of the registry information is organized digitally and electronic access enabled through citizens’ electronic identification.
